We are often asked for information regarding the Carer’s Allowance. Although we advise you to seek further details directly from the appropriate authorities or the official UK government website, the following information may help you in the short term:

Carer’s Allowance Eligibility

  • You must comply with the following in order to claim Carer’s Allowance in the UK:

  • You are aged 16 or over and not in full-time education

  • You care for someone for, at least, 35 hours per week helping them wash and cook, shop and manage household bills

  • You are responsible for taking them to medical appointments

  • You have been living in England, Scotland or Wales for, at least, 2 of the last 3 years (with the exception of refugees and those with humanitarian protection status)

  • You normally live in England, Scotland or Wales – or you live abroad as a member of the armed forces)

  • You are not studying for 21 hours per week or more

  • You are not subject to immigration control

  • Your earnings are currently £132 or less per week, after tax, National Insurance and other necessary expenses are deducted, e.g. pension payments, travel costs for work, self-employed business costs, and other work-related expenses

The person you’re caring for should be receiving the following payments as well:

  • Attendance Allowance

  • Constant Attendance Allowance at or above the standard maximum rate along with an Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit

  • Constant Attendance Allowance at the basic rate (full day) with a War Disablement Pension

  • The middle or highest rate for care under the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

Other considerations may allow you to apply for the Carer’s Allowance; your local authority will be able to advise you further. You don’t have to be related to the person you’re looking after, nor do you have to live with them.

Bear in mind…

  • You can only claim Carer’s Allowance for taking care of one person

  • The payment may be received by more than one person per household, e.g. a couple who care for each other

  • Any savings you have accrued are not taken into consideration during the application

  • The payment will not be awarded if you are studying for more than 21 hours per week

  • If you live in the UK to live in the EEA or Switzerland, it may be possible to maintain your Carer’s Allowance

  • And, if you already live in the EEA or Switzerland, you may be able to apply for the payment if you comply with certain criteria

  • The Carer’s Allowance will not be offered to those whose right to remain in the UK is limited or restricted by the Home Office

Most applications are straightforward but your local authority or the official government website will have further information if your situation is more complex.
